Commercial Photographers, what makes an image commercial/editorial? |
Im a photographer specializing in childrens photography, I mainly do work for familes but wanting to get into editorial/commercial photography. I get a lot of people saying my current work looks editorial and commerical but to me it doesnt. I want to know how can I get my work to look more commercial. I know most of the work I see in magazines the people are usually staring off and not looking into the camera and the focus is usually on what is being advertised, like clothing. I would love to shoot for a childrens clothing line and trying to get my portfolio together. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My website is www.owccphotography.com Basically what makes an image commerical or editorial is that someone decides to buy it and publish it, either commercially or editorially. I know that sound very simplistic, but in many cases, what constitutes a commercial/editorial photo is in the eye of the buyer. Looking at what advertisers are using is a great place to start. Put together a portfolio of images that tend to replicate what you are seeing in magaines, etc. and show it to prospective clients. As far as editorial, what you're looking for there is something of either news value or human interest value. Keep your camera with you at all times, if you seeing an interesting or unusual shot, take it and show it to your local news outlets. A lot time it a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Sounds like you already have the right idea! You have a lovely website, and I don't think there is much more needed to do on there. You should put together a printed folio book next however. Your photos already focus on the subjects needed to get out there! You really just need to market your website more....make as many contacts in the commercial photo industry as possible! Perhaps even create a CD-ROM folio that you can send out to prospective clients! You need to contact individual clothing lines, and send them to your website, and/or send your folio on cd. Try to get in to personally visit with them and show them your printed photo book. Also there are some great online photo forums that deal w/ the commercial topic, and you may find some great answers through that as well! http://photography-on-the.net/forum/... Its for canon shooters, but offer non specific canon photo advice as well! Good luck, i'm sure it'll work out for you, as you are very talented. *have you ever considered selling your photography as stock photography for graphic designers? There are a lot of things you can do with your work! :) |
