Career Help!? |
I'm about to finish my first year of college and still haven't chosen a major! For a while I thought i wanted to be a teacher, but then realized I didn't really like kids. Now I'm thinking about something art-related. What are some art careers that are fun? (I am looking for something fun) I'm not so keen on advertising and everything else seems completely unpractical. I would love to be a photographer and travel but that seems hopelessly immature and unrealistic. Still, I can't resign myself to a desk job. Please help! Oh my goodness - photography would be wonderful, it isn't immature at all. If there were no photographers in the world, National Geographic would be so incredibly boring. What about graphic design? Animation? And why not advertising? Some artists (Michael Gondry, Andy Warhol, more musicians than you can think of!) make quite a name for themselves via advertising - computer animation or gaming - there's such a wide variety of things that can utilize your artistic flair in the advertising field. http://www.pictoys.com/?p=25 Check out the little greynautz fellas - I love them (but it's originally a bit of corporate fluff!) His resume is online - check him out. Look at this guy's portfolio: http://www.ferryhalim.com/index2.htm... Source(s): Creative Careers (A list from Interior or Industrial Design to Fashion, film and video - there are so many possibilities!): http://www.creativecareerschools.com/art... Help in finding your niche: http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/services/caree... LifeCoach 101 tool (it's free - and revealing): http://www.keithferrazzi.com/lifecoachto... (I have several friends who make their living as potters - if you love it, do it - makes for a happy life!) Why do you think photography is hopelessly immature and unrealistic? Many people do this as a career. If you want to be a photographer, go for it! Many, many people make a great living taking pictures. Some travel, some don't. If that is what you want to be, speak with different people who do this for a living. It may be difficult to get started, but in the end it will be worth it. I would agree, a career like photojournalism is hardly immature and unrealistic. Careers in the arts are, however challenging to get into. If you are looking at anything in visual art you will need to be working on a portfolio as soon as possible. Not only does it help in building a network of people to get job leads, you'll end up having something tangible to show possible employers. Volunteer at local newspapers, find some weddings to shoot or people that want headshots or portraits. It's not easy or affordable, nor is it likely to be fun at first but it's no desk job and you'll find out whether or not its the right career path. |
