Commercial Photographers....what is the secret to breaking into the advertising and commercial market?

I am a child photographer and Im trying to get into the commerical/editorial market of photography. What is the best way to break into this market? Im also looking to get in as a photographer for a modeling agency what is the secret to doing this?????
Should I send samples of my work to modeling agencies and ad agencies??
I do have a website www.owccphotography.com

Thanks

I took a look at your website and you have some good work in there keep it up.

You are in a major city so that means there should be some advertising agencies there. Make a "ZED Card" with some of your work (3-5 images 5x7" is good) and contact information. Do some marketing and either drop off your work or mail to them to let them know you are available. Be persistent with the agencies and send them an updated "ZED Card" every few months so they remember who you are. If you get a response from an agency follow it up with a thank you note (if they are interested or not).

You might want to get the "2007 Photographers Market" handbook (amazon.com). There is a lot of information in there for you to find advertising agencies, book companies etc that might want to buy your work. Another is stock agencies but in the near future you have to make sure you get model releases from all of the babies and children you are shooting from the parents (you might be doing this already).

Take a look at the Rangefinder Magazine there is a lot of information in there mostly directed to shooting studio work like you are doing now. Even look at some of the older back issues if you find a subject that matches what you want.

Just do some research and some marketing be persistent and you might get into that market that you want.

Hope this helps,

It's best to build a portfolio. You should have a different one for each field you want to get into. It also helps, as far as modeling, if you know some models who would let you do head shots for them. That way you'll get you name out there. Ad agencies are tough, and after 10 years I still don't have a lot of success in that field. Sending samples out can work sometimes, but like I said it's better to know someone. Just find actors and models, show them your work and give them a good price for head shots, and chances are some casting agency or modeling agency will see the shots and maybe offer a freelance job. I hope that helps, and good luck. It's a stressful job to get started in, but once your foot is in the door, the world is yours.
Been there.
P.S.
Try and stay away from childrens photography... it may lead you to drink.... a lot!
After you finish school, find a commercial/advertising (editorial is a different marked all together and so is the equipment used) photographer and become an assistant for about five years. This will teach you the special skills necessary to be a successful commercial/advertising photographer, teach you the business end of photography and introduce you to a lot of contacts in the biz.

Along the way you can be building your book from tear sheets and shoots you can later use to impress future clients.

I have added a link to what some of the successful commercial/advertising photographers are doing.
