First-year media teacher needs help!? |
My degree is in English Education, but I took a job as a Media Arts teacher. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what they teach during the course of their school year: advertising, speaking skills, publishing, photography, etc.? This is for 7th and 8th grade, so it's very basic. Ask the school for a curriculum guide/text/benchmarks, whatever they have. This shows initiative, not lack of skills. Is this a year course/semester course/9weeks course/6 weeks course/4 week course? Is this an elective? Is this in the English dept or other? Is your middle school on teaming? block schedule? Is this a production class (that is, will your students be producing the news show at your school, the newspaper, a literary journal?) Is this a skills class? (How to keyboard/how to use Word/how to search on line and evaluate the website/how to make a webpage/ ) If you have a department chair, this is the person to talk to. You could also talk to the high school that your students will eventually attend and talk to the Media Arts person there, who can let you know what the kids need to know to continue. Formulate as many specific questions as you can and go talk to someone in your school system. Asking questions is good. You will have a million. With any luck, you will be assigned a good mentor teacher to help you figure out not only what to teach, but all the quirks each school has (who you can talk to and who is a gossip, where to park, how the copy machine works, which admin.has it together and which is an idiot, etc. etc.) Good luck. Teaching is great. Middle School teacher since, gasp, 1979! Media teachers will show kids how to use computers at the 7th and 8th grade levels. |
