How to start a career in Photography?

I'm going to take my 2nd photography class next year(senior in High School), then go to college(in Orlando, FL) and probably major in photography. I know I'm going to need lots of experience and stuff like that before I could get a decent job with photography.
I've heard photographing weddings is good. How does one go about advertising that?
Also, what are good cameras(and lenses) for a decent price, or pay for themselves in the long run?(and where could I find them?)
I like taking pictures of a lot of things, I don't have one preference.
Thank you for your time and any answers given.

Wedding photography was a great profession till few years ago. Then recently with digital camera so good and easy to operate, that market is almost collapsing. Too many people jumping and calling themselves "pro" and undercutting the market. It used to be that there was a minimum cost (of film and development, mega $$ photo equipment) but now everybody is getting cheap cameras and offering images on CD. So there's no expense. Also it used to be that a wedding photographer would take about 200 pic and choose about 50 to 100 images. So most of his images had to be good. Now SOME wedding photographer shoot 2,000 (yes two thousand) images and choose maybe 100 images. So it isn't always about being good any more.

Shop that had their own printing machines had a advantage but not anymore. There were few wedding photo studios around here (NYC / Queens) that closed down.

I spoke to the owner of one the largest in NYC and he is doing OK (because he has studio, wedding dress, catering, etc - all in one stop shop). And he feels that there will always be a need for a "pro" but it will be hard making a living as one. He thinks that it'll be mostly young college students doing the work and then quiting when they graduate (because then they would need "real" money).

But of course that doesn't mean professional photography is dead. There's more and more images everywhere. But those are very slim market reserved for editorial photographers. It's like in the 30, 40 and in the 50 there were lots of professional musician. Then as hi-fi equipments got better there were less need for live performers. So there's always musicians (even today) but not as many needed and only the very top make a good living.

But if you really love it, go for it. Just don't expect it to be easy future (in term of jobs).
College has Dipolma Certificate, from your country, they needed Bachelor of Arts in Photography (London),ARPS(London),APSNY(Ne... York),etc, that what I have for Twenty years of experiences in Photography business and Photojournalist.Canon camera will delighting you always, like EOS Rebel XT,etc. If you wanted to learn photography, I could teach you some techniques of photography, because I am one of a Judge and lecturer in Photography.
Weddings require the most skill and experience. A lot of photographers do years of other photography before becoming an assistant wedding photographer, irrespective of qualifications which is a help. Lean all you can in other areas of photography, ie landscapes, objects, modeling, portraits, then move to having a go at weddings. I know a lot of pro photographers who will not do weddings because of the liability. Some are sued for the whole cost of the wedding if a shot is not in focus or the groom is on the wrong side in any shot.
To advertise there are lots of ways, local ad's leaflets etc, I get lots of work from the web and recommendation.
Best Wishes xx
