what was the difference before that time and after
Aerial archaeology is a spin-off from WWII. Photo reconnaissance assessed bomb raid success. Surface anomalies where noticed, indicating existing feature but surveys showed no physical evidence. The realisation that they were caused by subsurface disturbance was a surprise. There was limited or no funds during wartime recovery period, to exploit the data. In the early 60's, I recall my geography master at school ( an ex RAF navigator ), saying it was then uneconomic to investigate the phenomena exposed, but would be a future archaeological tool. To answer your question prior to 1960, it was used to create archaeology by bombing and discovery, thereafter. |
