Could old type of art be successful now?

the kind that you see in art galleries

no, i mean GALLERIES, paintings are shown in GALLERIES, objects and stuff are shown in museums, my sister works in one (a really good one) and i visit it often so i know that paintings aren`t in museums.

Everything old is new again. I think people are getting a little sick of paint splattered on a drop cloth and called art. Canvases that are painted black or white and called art. Just because something is different doesn't make it better. The mastery of the great painters can not be reproduced by most of the newer painters, so they just go for different. If I was given the choice of a Pierre Cot or a Oskar Kokoschka, I would pick the Cot. If my kindergartner can do as well, I can hardly call it great art.

I'm amused at this ... I think you mean museums! Galleries tend to have whatever sells, and this can be anything.

I think you mean figurative art, like people, landscapes, still lifes, etc.? As opposed to abstraction ... which is now considered an 'old' type of art in a way too.

Yes, and Westerners are losing financial ground of their own culture. It a multimillion dollar a year Chinese industry.

When the dated kitsch of Norman Rockwell is seriously considered as art, you know that we are in a period of "anything goes."

Ultimately, it is not whether art is realistic or abstract, but whether it has intellectual weight and integrity. Does a work have the visual drama of Chinese calligraphy? The mystery of Leonardo's "Mona Lisa"? The gravitas of Michelangelo's "The Creation of Adam"? The joy of Van Gogh's "Starry Night"? If an artist's heart, mind and soul is engaged making the work, others will respond to it. Without that, it just wallpaper.

You know, cubism, pop art, abstract art is all history now, so what do you mean? Anyway, I think it depends on what kind of atmosphere is around you, what kind of people surround you, what are their demands. Realistic painiting is not that accepted much in Slovakia, for example, but New York is very open to that type of art and you can meet with great demand.

i don't know what you mean by 'old type of art' perhaps more realistic versus abstract. I am beginning to see in the Parisan art galleries more figurative art than in the past and I find that exciting because here in France figurative has been basically 'out'. Now it's turning more to realistic because I think a good realistic painter can generally do abstract whereas the reverse isn't always the case.
