How do I get my canvas paintings up in a gallery?

I have two paintings that I made of Johnny Depp characters. One of Willy Wonka and one of Edward Scissorhands. (30" by 24" for sale - $200) I was just wondering recently how I might get my art displayed in a gallery. I have more Johnny Depp paintings in the making. One of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and one of Jack Sparrow : ) I think the four of them would be a great addition in a gallery because everyone loves Johnny Depp and it would generate a lot of attention for walk throughs. I just need to know how to get my work in a gallery. Any ideas/thoughts?

Here are some ideas:
1. Tell everyone you know that you want to exhibit in an art gallery and ask them to introduce you and/or recommend you and your work to the gallery owner.
2. Send emails with photos of your work to galleries in your area.
3. Take your paintings and go in person to galleries until you find the right one for your work.
4. Be sure to sign a contract - galleries take a high percentage of the sale price, so you have to negotiate in order to get the amount you expect.
5. Never give up on your ideas or dreams!

The best way of getting your art seen and known are putting them in an art contest. Some of those are bought right out of the show, then you could give your price. Search the web for some nearby contests.

You should begin by visiting galleries and determining, based on the kinds of works that they exhibit, whether or not they would be interested in your work. Each gallerie has a certain style of art that they promote. You should only target those galleries where you feel they exhibit similar style to your own work.
Set up a website where you present your work. Write to the galleries that you feel might be interested in your work and invite them to visit your website. You can also make slides of your work or download your work onto a disk and send it to them along with a letter. You can visit these galleries and bring slides or a disk containing pictures of your work and ask them if they would be interested in exhibiting your paintings. You can also contact these galleries through e-mail.

get out and on the scene. show your face at galleries all the time, and then when you have started to like some over the others make face even more, go in on nights when theres no opening and its just you and the gallery owner. make face so much that they know who you are when you go in and every once in a while drop the line that your an artist, dont be pushy or seem desperate, make them want you. a gallery owner just gave me this advice. but one thing is for sure, it aint gonna happen over night
