Artistically speaking. They don't have to be your contacts, or loving friends or whatever. We are speaking only about the aesthetic view of the avatars.
Because I've see some, really nice, great looking, fanciful avatar-paintings.

I'd start with yours and Lefty's. I'm all about cats. I like other art, but there won't be enough space for all the kitties.

there used to be a certain skeleton by Van Gogh that still gives me the chills (in a good way) when I see it:)

As one trained in the Fine Arts, I would be more likely to buy blank canvas and tubes of oils, to render the P&S in my own style. :P
