How do i get a gallery to exhibit my paintings?

i tried going to many galleries to showcase my paintings... some told me they don't exhibit my kind of art (my paintings are abstract), and some told me to try other galleries... how do i get my foot in the door?

I used to be very well connected to the artworld and let me tell you...I get this asked by young artists all the time. SImply put:

You don't usually pick the gallery, the gallery picks you.

What I would recommend is to make friends with other artists as it is important to stay in touch with your contemporaries. It's always good to stay in the loop and this is how galleries will know of your work.

Most artists start off by being included in local group shows and it grows from there. No matter what, try not to believe that gallery representation and selling artwork is representative of your work as an artist. I know of some outstanding artists that are still trying to sell work.

Just keep your chin up and of course, get a good looking website together.

bring your portfolio and hit the pavement and the gallery does indeed choose you.

For a beginner and even for artists with a certain background it's always difficult to get into a gallery.
Do you have a curriculum with exhibitions ?
Try to enter on contests to gain some exposure.
Check the Internet Sales Strategies at the Business Forum on the Wetcanvas site.
It's important that you believe in the quality of your work and keep getting better. Be ready.
