How much commission do art galleries take on sold artwork? |
This question is for artists who have sold work through a gallery or individuals who have worked in galleries. Depends on the gallery. From experience about 15-25%. Lucky you guys, the galleries in Scotland I exhibit in take 40% which seems to be the norm. One particularly greedy gallery owner takes 40% + v.a.t. These are commercial galleries. In my experience, 40%. I would agree with atom, I have experienced the range from 10 -30%. You can always haggle with them, it depends what market they are attracting to their gallery really. I think it depends on their own overheads and their profit margin. See what they are offering, ie first night wine, nibbles etc. Some smaller or council run galleries take a lot less commission. I went to all the websites and signed all the petitions I could several days ago!!! It is an awful thing that this guy is doing! He should be chained and starved too to show what it feels like, and... it makes you despair how low people will sink, absolutely no respect for animals, this man is just sick!!!!! And as for the visitors they should be really ashamed of their selves, its disgusting... At first, I didn't know what you were talking about and I googled it. This is horrible!
