I bought a piece of artwork for $50 at a local sale. After looking up the artist - I found....? |
a sales invoice for this exact piece from 1983. It was sold for $3,000. This, of course, sparked my interest. I called up the galleries that represented him, and found out that his pieces go for $5,000 to $20,000. He sold a 5 x 7 inch piece for $8,000. My piece is two feet by three feet. I need money (starting career & growing family) and I want to unload the piece. FYI, the artist works/lives in my town (NYC). My question is, how do I go about seliing this piece - knowing nothing about art sales - without getting ripped off by a more knowlegeable broker? Are there steps/caveats that I should be aware of in doing this process? Any ideas? Thanks in advance. One thing to keep in mind - art is percieved value - what one person says may be worth thousands, you may only find buyers who will pay hundreds. Get an estimate, and then try and find buyers willing to pay near that price. Be ready to sell at a price much lower though - Go to an art musuem and get it checked out and valued You found benefit What luck! I would find an art appraiser to get a correct estimate for this work. If it is less good work it might be worth less, or it might be a rare early work and be worth more. A competent art appraiser will know, or if he doesn't know he will know who to ask. It is his job to give you a fair appraisal. If you want to be really really sure, ask two separate appraisers. Two ways that can be helpful are ebay and also contact Christies. They may be able to help you. Great find. Christie's Client Services Telephone: +44 (0)20 7389 email: info@christies.com |
