In the Haida society, the use of Copper symbolizes wealth and prestige, many chiefly possessions consists many objects made out of copper. If copper were so important, what is the value of gold originally? and why do many modern Haida artists chose to use gold in their art and jewelery instead of copper to represent their culture? I have an object I want to discuss, http://www.amnh.org/exhibitions/totems/g... anyone have any ideas?
i would think it was because gold wasnt as plentiful or accessible as copper was. they use it today because now they are more apt to be soliciting to the wider audience wherein gold is the highest standard in this type of craft..... wow i just went to the site. talk about pinnacle of a craft!. jim hart is a master of haida art |
