I have an idea for an artist show or series, where do I start?

I'm a body painter with an idea for a series of images that I think would be perfect for a gallery showing and maybe eventually a book. I have no money to fund this project. I want to be able to pay the models and photographers, etc.Are there any types of people that invest in a project like this or do I just need to save up my money? Do I contact a gallery before I start or after I'm done? I work mostly in the entertainment industry, and although I have a strong appreciation for all things artistic, I don't know the art industry at all! Help !

You can apply for a grant...you will need a written proposal...basically the who what when where stuff.

Start the project...pick up a camera and see what happens.....
nobody ever has money for the project they want to do...

A body of work evolves slowly...start with a friend ask them to participate...people will get involved 1) to help you and 2) to have their picture taken....
It depends what country you are in! Where are you?!

I will give you the Canadian perspective.

This could be a wonderfuyl project!!!!!
I would recomend you connect with your local arts community. Stop talking about what your idea is and find out where the photographers are? Who are they?Get a few names and find out which ones are really artists!!! DO they have an exhibition record in reputable galleries? VERY IMPORTANT!

Now that you are nartrowing it down, look at which ones you might like to colaborate with. What is their work like? What has been their primary focus? Could you get along with this person?!

NOw write of this idea intelligently and make it look professional. Get really good photos of your body art as samples. Not like the ones you want to do but just domething clean and beautiful to put in your proposal package.

Phone the person and see if they will meet you for coffee to dicuss the project. Make sure that they understand this is Fine Art not porn. Present it as a fifty fifty. Your art and their art. Not a straight up documentation of your body art. I personally believe, no matter what anyone else says that just being a photo is not the only criteria for copy right.

There is copy right on photographic work and you really need to have somethin g on paper that protects your rights as your work is being photographed by this person.

Now making the body art and photographing it yourself is the only way to insure your copy right is clear unless you get this on paper as a formal agreement before you start the project!

Otherwise you could end up in a horrible mess when it comes to exhibiting the work and publishing it! So make sure you are not only part of the project in terms of creating the body art, but also make sure you are part of how it is photographed. Your creative input, your stamp, needs to be on that image!

As collaboraters, you can apply for a grant. Go for it. If your partner is all set to go...maybe you can just save for the paint and modeel fees. You can also ask people to volunteer to model for you. That could be more interesting. You tweo could go in on the models fees together. Rem,ember, the more shared the responsibilities the better. Make sure the inspiration is clearly yours. Withoutr your body art the project does not exist in this unique fashion!

If you are in the entertainment industry, look at how this may support the premiss for your project. Get together your CV, make it lean and professional. List everything that backs up this project in terms of expertise and why this is interesting to you.

Best of luck. It sounds like something worth doing and I would love to see the exhibition. I don't say that often. So get this done!

Peace!
