Is my work worth paying for? |
Hi, I've been sketching, drawing and painting for as long as I can remember (since I was 4 years old, to be precise), and I've always been told that I'm quite talented, etc., although I tend not to believe it that much. I love my art. I love drawing, painting, portraying, doing caricatures, cartoons and even engaging in all kinds of graphic and design projects; basically, I can't settle on one single area - and this could well be a problem. I recently dropped out of college. I was on Media Studies, but I wasn't enjoying it at all, so I made a decision that I'll probably regret later on my life. Thing is, I'm not very keen on working in a fast-food restaurant or anything like that, I wanted to accomplish something, fulfill myself professionally; I guess that my 'art' is the only way I can do that. Here's a link to my DevianArt page, where you can see some of my work - http://brunoadrego.deviantart.com/galler... What do you really think? Is what I do actually worth paying for? Well you are talented, but "EDUCATION FIRST" that's what my dad always tells me. You should finish college but study something you really enjoy and then decide what you really want to do. That way if anything happens you still have something to fall back on so you wont have to spend your life at McDonald's working for low amount of money. Your art work is amazing. Your very good at cartoons, if I were you I would look for a job in drawing for cartoon shows. Thats just my opinion. I like your art you just have to find what you love most. I was in the same boat. Im a current art major and also had trouble finding what I love most ended up mine was photography. Im sure youll find out what your truly happy with. You should also have more confidence in your art your quite talented http://lace18.deviantart.com/ this industry is tough. Most companies look for the talent and don't care if you didn't complete a degree but the way they hire people to work for them is by hiring their interns! The ones who stayed in school and they don't want to go out lookin for someone else cause they've got a great person right there. But if they are cheap, theyll go out and find someone they can payless i.e... a college drop out. Dude your salary maybe hurtin cause of your decision to drop out. what are you doing for work now? Busing tables? Unless your doing something related to your talent (which you do very well, I don't know if you are rendering the work in illustrator after you draw it (that's tough I hate the pen tool) go back to school, especially if you were a junior or senior. So long story short sure someone will pay for it but it 's all about marketing yourself and the pay you'll receive. Designer/Photographer/Producti... Coordinator for a magazine...I wear many hats Good stuff! The hard part is finding the paying audience. with the type of work you like to do,I would recomend checking out magazines at a large bookstore. Some of them look for artwork to publish, or have contests witch may give you recognition. I'd say your talent certainly has marketable value and it would be nice to paint what we like and for people to buy it, but it doesn't start out that way. As for work, you would be surprised at the types of jobs many artist held as they continued to persue their dream and passion for art, untill they managed to work their way into the art curcuit. At some point you will probably have to decide what direction to take with your art. I am a self taught traditional artist who actually started out wanting to be a commercial artist. It took me a while to choose the path i eventually took, and it hasn't been an easy one, but it's been a rewarding one. Don't question your talent, go out and find the people that may be interested in your work because one thing i know from experience, they sure the heck aren't looking for us. My work can be checked out at hellosanantonio.com under artist name ''Guerro''. |
