Looking for curious specimen.? |
While in New Orleans two years ago I came across this unusual piece of art and didn't buy it. I am trying to find one now and hope someone out there has some information. It was called a Curious Specimen. The artist had taken the skeletal bones of dead mice and reconstructed them and added in butterfly wings and mounted the creation in a glass enclosure. He said they were created to be "fairy skeletons". They were the strangest, most fascinating pieces I'd ever seen. I have searched and searched and have come up with nothing. I know the gallery was on Decatur Street in the French Quarter. I can't completely make out the artist name on the card - looks like Peter Ninsen. I tried the email address but heard nothing back. Don't know if the gallery was distroyed in the hurricane. Thank you for any help. Good Info. to have......... Catastrophic fires and devastating hurricanes have scarred and shaped the face of the French Quarter throughout the years. Hurricane Katrina is only our latest installment. However, it states that the area is coming back and is doing just fine. I'm quite curious and I suppose I'm a specimen, does that count?! contact the gallery (if you can) also try the local library for any info as they might be able to steer in the right direction During the early '80s I went to a sci-fi convention in Aneheim, CA. Among the artwork on display were several examples of fantasy creations of mixed animal bones. Winged lizards, frighteningly fanged cat skulls, winged snakes...etc. I'm sorry to say I don't remember the artists name, but the displays were the stuff of dreams and nightmares. Wonderful stuff! You can try contacting The New Orleans Museum of Art. (504) 658-4100. I would guess the person was just an undiscovered artist. We have a lot of them here in New Orleans. Decatur Street was not destroyed in the Hurricaine, just a little damaged. Most if not all businesses are up and running. If NOMA can not help, they may be able to at least give you the name of the gallery. |
