How many versions of Starry Night? |
After years of dreaming of owning,I just bought Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh.My absolute favorite piece of art. The Lady at the gallery told me that there are more than one verson of Starry Night.Do you know if this is true? It is so beautiful.I just had to tell someone.I am in awe and thrilled.:) Nice choice Susan, I suppose you got the version with the view from the Asylum which is the one called starry night. There is also one called starry night on the Rhone, and one overlooking a terrace in Arles with a bit of night sky showing. Those two were slightly earlier paintings. Personally I fell in love with van Gogh because we had a poster of it in school when I was 10 /11 yrs old. The Bridge at Arles with the boats on the left and the woman washing. I never so a blue look so Blue!!,so that one will always be my favorite. There's just one actually called "The Starry Night" painted from the window of the asylum he was in at the time. However the same method of the sky and stars was repeated in other paintings so they can look rather similar. Starry Night is pretty much a landscape with the sky as the main focus. The others that might be mistaken for it have other things in them as the focus of the painting, such as a caf茅. So no, there's only one version of Starry Night but there are other works that have the same type of sky in them so are often mistaken. Congratulations on getting a copy of such a wonderful painting. There are indeed versions of Starry Night and you can learn about them with a Yahoo Search: versions of van gogh starry night Good luck, and enjoy the Van Gogh masterpiece. there's always early studies of most paintings, rough sketches perhaps or something done on the fly to capture feelings and moods and what you want to put down later. as you can see on this wikipedia page, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/starry_nigh... there's a pen version done after he did the painting. i don't want to rain on your parade, but unless you paid a pretty penny (perhaps especially if you did) for your latest acquisition, you might want to get a second opinion. take it to get appraised and insured. 1? I hope youre saying you bought a print. Because you sure as heck didn't buy the actual starry night. Theres only one. I guess theres many people out there who do copies. |
