Am I better off with a $60K debt for a MFA from SFAI or a full assistantship MFA at Bowling Green State Univ?

I would like to find work as a college painting/drawing professor as well as show art in galleries.

I went to BGSU for undergrad and majored in art history with a minor in fine arts. We have a really good art department with a wide variety of courses and some really amazing teachers. The studios are good too. A lot of our intro drawing & painting courses are taught by grad students, so you could probably get some good experience there.
I just finished an MFA in Sculpture from a school that does not have an undergrad population, and thus, no teaching opportunities. That was fine with me, I really enjoyed having 2 solid years to only work on my work.

However, if you are interested in teaching, you should make sure your grad program is going to prepare you for that career. Teaching jobs are difficult enough to find on their own, you should get as much experience teaching as you can.

On the other hand, I have friends who felt that teaching took too much time away from their own work and studies while in grad school.

You should try to visit each place and pay attention to the vibe you get from students and faculty, you will do your best work in the place you feel most comfortable.

Don't base your decision on the money, loan payments aren't really that bad.

Good luck!
