Washington DC travel help from someone who lives there?

In your opinion, which one should I go to? Pros/Cons... etc. It is free, whichever one I pick, and I can only pick one:

1. Freer Gallery of Art (I want to major in Graphic Design)
2. Smithsonian Castle (Never heard of it)
3. Arts and Indrusties Building (What's in it?)
4. Hirshhorn (Never heard of it)
5. National Air & Space Museum (I heard was amazing)
6. Natural History Museum (Nature isn't my thing)
7. American History Museum (Could be pretty cool)

If you're a designer, either Hirshhorn or Freer.
They are both world-class art museums.

I have been in all of them. They are actually very close togther, within about five square blocks.

1. Freer Gallery of Art (I want to major in Graphic Design)
Oriental art gallery, if you like Japanese prints

2. Smithsonian Castle (Never heard of it)
Has the grave of Smithsonian, exhibits on history of DC

3. Arts and Indrusties Building (What's in it?)
It has the exhibits from the Exhibition of 1876. Lots of historical stuff.

4. Hirshhorn (Never heard of it)
One of the best modern art collections in the world.
All has an excellent sculpture collection.

5. National Air & Space Museum (I heard was amazing)
It is, has the Wright Flyer, Spirit of St Louis, moon rocks, space capsules

6. Natural History Museum (Nature isn't my thing)
Has the world's best gem collection, including Hope Diamond

7. American History Museum (Could be pretty cool)
It is pretty cool, and will be closing for major renovations in September 2006, and will be closed for quite a while.
1.Freer Gallery of Art (I want to major in Graphic Design)
This may be a good choice for you. The emphasis is on Asia art and only Asian art, but if that is what you want, this is a great place to go. If you want a more representative (and larger) collection, try the National Gallery of Art. It鈥檚 also on the Mall. Another idea is the smaller Sakler Gallery. It also has a lot of Asian Art, but it smaller and would give you time to see something else as well.

2.Smithsonian Castle (Never heard of it)
Skip the castle. It is, as its name suggests, a castle, but there is nothing there. It used to house the entire Smithsonian collection back in the day, and now it is a visitor鈥檚 center and administrative offices. If you were planning to visit many museum I would say go there first to plan your trip, but for one museum you don鈥檛 need it.

3. Arts and Industries Building (What's in it?)
Don鈥檛 go 鈥?it鈥檚 closed for renovations. A strange one, but a neat building. It used to house the 19876 exhibitions from the Word鈥檚 Fair. Then it housed some of them, and rotated exhibitions in the rest.

4. Hirshhorn (Never heard of it)
Modern Art and only Modern Art. Again, if that is your interest, it ahs a great collection. If not, skip it, as that is all there is.
There is a small sculpture garden dug into the group in front of it that I would visit even if I wern't going inside however - it only takes 15 minutes to see but is really quite special (my favorite is Rodin's "Burghers of Calais"
5. National Air & Space Museum (I heard was amazing)
It is very popular, but I think National Gallery and Natural history are much better. Mostly aircraft, spacecraft, a cool planetarium (not your father鈥檚 planetarium) and my favorite 鈥?a piece of moon rock that you can touch (Natural History Museum also has one)

If you have the time and like air and space, I would skip the mall and go out to the Air & Space museum鈥檚 Udvar-Hazy center near Dulles Airport. It is enormous and has many of the air and spacecraft that are technical marvels, made history or are just really cool. It also has an IMAX theater. Most are enormous, so they need their own facility and would never fit in the building on the mall.

6. Natural History Museum (Nature isn't my thing)
If you don鈥檛 like nature, it may not be for you. It is as its name suggests- Dinosaurs, evolution, animals and ecosystems of the world, geology and a heck of a gems collection. Also has an IMAX theater.

7. American History Museum (Could be pretty cool)
A mixed bag. The cool stuff is very, very cool. There are some things that I don鈥檛 see as significant as others, however, for example, a jukebox from the 1950s. But the real historical stuff is really great. Its most famous item in the collection is the flag that Francis Scott Key watched when he wrote the 鈥淪tar Spangled Banner,鈥?but there is a lot more to it.

So I uses it is again up to you. I hope the descriptions are a bit more helpful in working out what you want. You can also go to each museum鈥檚 websites to see pieces of their collections and exhibitions to get a better idea if it is for you (www.smithsonian.org).
