Modern Art- is it me or is it just crap by people who can't paint or draw? |
On a recent holiday I visited the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao out of curiosity. I only paid half the normal price as half the galleries were closed. I'm glad they were. What a load of old tosh! One artist (I use the term loosely) had one entitled 'Pencil on Canvas'. All it was was a load of lines. Round the corner was another by the same person entitled 'Lead Pencil on Canvas'- again a load of lines. I've been told that you are supposed to look at the finished product and think what the artist was thinking at the time he was creating (?) his work. I know exactly what he was thinking- some sucker will pay a fortune for this rubbish- especially if I can get a rich dim wit to sponsor me. Or am I a complete phillistine? I am an artist for a living...and I completely agree with you and subsequently for those beliefs have lost many artist friends. a lot of the modern artists are famous just because of their PR reps. I have had countless people try to show me the "talent" that lies in the pieces...I am sorry...I just don't believe it is there. The are world you will find has a lot of suckers in it who are told what they like and what is good...somehow they try to come across as learned and sophisticated. I don't buy it. One very poigniant moment in my life came from an instructor and the art college I attended who told me that in order to be successful in the city galleries he literally had to teach himself to draw and paint poorly. That should say something about the caliber of art. We have a piece at our local museum that is nothing but a suspended car with flourescent tubes around it. Another is just a cement wall...how is that art? i think its just painted by a cat!!!lol Art, music, fashion, too much garbage from people with too much time on their hands and little or no talent. i can appreciate all art it doesn't have to be aesthetically pleasing or have a literal subject to provoke some sort of feeling from you if you open your mind. if it makes you feel its irie no matter what art it is. There's a good reason why things are classic. They stand the test of time and everyone can recognize the beauty, talent and excellence behind them. Then there's the people who like to think of themselves as posessing some talent. They try to convince you that the emperor does have clothes. But only because they need to distort the truth and believe something that just isn't there, namely, that they have no talent. It's like the crappy artist that says "I paint what I see" But try to tell them they are blind then, and they insult you and hawl the politically correct yet illogical attacks at you. Things that are real and true and good, everyone can sense as such. Listen to music. read a poem. look at a painting. you just may notice that the most talentless can call themselves artists and we will believe them. for what I reason, I do not know. It's just you. |
