Hi, Im off to New York in August and wondered if anyone could recommend some art exhibitions to visit?

Essentially, Im going to New York specifically to visit Galleries and was looking for suggestions as to what is worth seeing over August. Im especially interested in the smaller galleries and any events/special days that are worth seeing. Finally, I love Gallery/Museum shops so would be great to hear peoples recommendations for these too.

There is some cool stuff (Girodet) going on at the Met right now, though that place is fundamentally screwed up. If you go there or to the American Museum of Natural History DONT PAY FULL PRICE! I go every week and pay a quarter each time. Just say " One adult for a quarter" and hand that shiny little disc to 'em. Sometimes they give you a dirty look, but if I were to pay $20 every-time, I'd be giving them the look. There are always the galleries in Chelsea (around 23rd and between 11th and 9th avenues) Also The New Museum of Contemporary Art is down in the area. (you have to pay there, but it's usually worth it) What I've been checking out is the public work going on in Brooklyn. In the Williamsburg area a lot of pasting and painting all over the neighborhood by some really talented people. And it only costs you a train ride. Anyway, it's hot right now and probably will be when you get here so bring shorts. Good luck.

the Met for one. HUGE and great.
then try the Natural history of america, (forgot the name, but close to the met too) all about american history,
they have a shirt geromino wore in it, lots of other great stuff too...

I live near the city and like to visit galleries as well. Get yourself a copy of the magazine, Time Out New York. They have listings of all the galleries and museums with the artists that are being shown. Have a great trip!
