Looking for paintings of slaves in Bristol between 1698-1750? |
Hi. I am looking for paintings of slaves in Bristol (or just England) between 1698-1750. I am not familiar with searching for and using paintings as sources, so I don't really know how to look for this. (Should I visit art galleries' websites, is there a paintings index somewhere, etc) Do you guys have any ideas? Thanks. Not a lot of luck, but here's a couple of semi related sources with a (modern) painting of an English slave and a contemporary portrait of a slave ship out of Bristol. The third has some paintings of black people in England (not Bristol specifically) in the 18th century. PS- It's after your time frame, but I'll mention because it's relevant to the subject at least- there's a book entitled Blind Memory: Visual Representations of Slavery in England and America by Marcus Wood; if it's not at your local library they can order it for you either free or for a very small fee (usually $1 or $2) through Interlibrary Loan. It's mostly later but it does have some older images and you can see some at Google books (last link below).
