Does anyone live in or near New Haven, CT or Providence RI.? |
My husband and I are considering relocating to one of these locations. We both grew up around NYC but relocated to Northern Florida about three years ago. Weather is nice but being a middle-aged childless couple we are looking for and a more fun, active urban downtown setting. Preferably an area that offers good cultural events, art galleries, entertainment, and great food options, etc. It seems like New Haven or Providence might be a nice option.....NYC and Boston are great but $$$$$$$$$$!!!! Your feedback about living in these areas (pros and cons) would be greatly appreciated! Providence is absolutely the way to go. It is closer to Boston and New Haven is closer to NYC but both cities have Amtrak stops that are on the line from Boston-NYC-Washington. Also Providence has an airport that actually has reasonably priced flights and is very accessable. But besides transportation, Providence is becoming a much more cosmopolitan city while New Haven still has a lot of urban problems, i.e. not so vibrant downtown. Providence has a lot of REALLY good Italian restaurants in Federal Hill, which is their "Little Italy". (New Haven does too though.... the ONE good thing about New Haven is that they have pizza that's at least as good as NYC and I wouldn't say that lightly). Providence has a HUGE fairly new shopping mall downtown, lots of other good restaurants, and a couple of art museums. Although New Haven has Yale, Providence has Brown which is a gorgeous college campus and also RISD and a couple other schools too. It seems like a much more vibrant ctiy to me. Lots of art galleries, especially around RISD, which is a great neighborhood, and a lot of bookstores and restaurants around Brown as well. Plus it's only about an hour from Boston by train, and you can take the commuter rail from Providence-Boston too. Providence is closer to Boston than New Haven is to NYC. I would emphatically recommend Providence. I was born in New Haven! It is a city with lots of history and geat museums, arts,cultural events, tons of ethnic resturants, theatres,a city green with lots of cultural, music and art events, and in the heart of it all, Yale with it's own art and museums,etc... and the few places you stay away from. high taxes keep most people out. But lots and lots of renovation of old neighborhoods with most of the folks moving in being in their 30's with young families. Good Luck, we take ourselves and our kids down to New Haven often, we live about 45 minutes away. I am most likely relocating to Providence soon. Plenty of things to do. Only drawbacks I see are the rush hour traffic, taxes going up, and almost always a corrupt mayor. But I really do like the area. |
