Why do self taught artists have a hard time selling? |
We dont have educational art back grounds ? We arnt serious enough ? This is all I get when I go to art galleries to TRY to expose. Do any of you have the same problems ? here is what I do.......its not too bad ? Is it ? http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/b... I have heard those same comments early in my art career. Remember, most galleries are owned by artists and sometimes they resent seeing good work from someone who did not "pay their dues" by suffering through art school as they did. A degree in art has little to do with the success of an artist. Learn how to operate in the art profession from those who have already been there. You might benefit from reading Making It As An Artist by professional artist JoAnn DePolo. This book gives advice about what gallery owners expect from artists. Good work is just half the battle...presenting your work is the other. Good art presented the proper way will have a better chance of being displayed in galleries. There is a lot to learn in this profession. Keep at it and do not give up. Success in any profession takes time. Great work by the way! people networking problems, school student are more open to believing in school and the social activities that go with it. more pople you know the better you can find a fish to bite. what exactly do you do artist for personal use or artist for business [living off what you make] if you are living a life that needs a tag next to its name then get a life! artist are born free! but require the laws of art to be achieved as a principle I've heard people went with your talent, but I never believed in it either. For being really recognized, companies or other employers often ask for studies. I've met students which couldn't draw half as well as artists who learnt by themselves. Still, people believe too much in education for understanding what real art is. What I would advice you to do, is to make contacts with people from the artistic domain. Any branch of it. They will know your art and may talk about you to other influent people someday. The more people you know, the easiest it will always be. Never refuse to show someone your art. And be proud... it's very important :) You're a skilled artist, I see it in your drawings. Keep up, and never put your head down :) Artist are mainly right brained and spelling and most things like it are a left brained activity. I know as I have been an artist for 40 years and I still have a hard time spelling. I think it is great to be self taught and motivated. but it would do you good to educate yourself in some manner-books, internet, relating to other artists. when you go to a gallery their are certain requirements and and procedures (forgive me if you know of these) but you should make yourself familiar with professional artist practices. that way you will seem as pro as possible. Even an art education and being serious ''enough'' is no gaurantee. Many galleries are as finicky as some artist are about the stuff they do. As good as your art is perhaps it didn't fit in with the gallery's preference. I checked out your work and your pretty good, now i'm going to ask you a question you've probably been asked before, ''Do you do anything else?''. I am also a self taught artist and most of my work is commissioned, i don't deal with galleries at the moment. Make and cultivate your own contacts, let everyone you know and meet that you are an artist, hand out your buisiness cards and let people know you are for hire, but perhaps most important post your artwork on a site and let people know you have one. My work can be checked out at hellosanantonio.com and my art page is under the name Guerro. |
