Massachusetts sightseeing? |
I have a travel report for school and I'm doing mine on Massachusetts. I just wanted to get a starter-list on all the different things to do in the state, not just in Boston. I'm looking for big things that anyone would know about, but also maybe you live there and you know of a restaurant, small art gallery, etc, that you just HAVE to go see but wouldn't be in any travel brochure. Thanks! Emily Dickenson's home is in Amherst, you can visit it. I was a tour guide there for a year. In my town of Wendell MA, there are unusual stone "caves". no one reallly knows what they were used for. Locally they are referred to at the Monks Caves, because one theory is they were for hiding. the 'caves' are reallly just holes in the ground or side of a hill, lines with stones. They may have been winter storage caves. There is one you can get into if you are thin. It's 6 or 7 feet in diameter, and is so old there is a large birch tree growing from the crack of the stone on the top of the cave. That wouldn't be in any tour book! Um, there are dinosaur tracks on Mt Tom. The Quabbin Resivoir is interesting, 4 towns were bought out by the state, houses destroyed, graves moved. A place i've brought my boys is http://www.higgins.org/ an all knight-armor museum. One place I recently learned about, after living in MA all my life are the Boston Harbor Islands. On one there is a civil war era fort and prison that you can visit for free. (after you take the ferry) they have summer activities at these tiny islands, like storytelling, museum of science presentations.
