Edinburgh Fringe Festival street-performers: Why are so many unoriginal, annoying and not even Scottish? |
Well, that's the impression I have been left with after going there a few times and watching street-entertainers along the Royal Mile and near the art gallery (next to the park). My impressions (solidified today) is that the performers are: * Predominantly Aussies, Yanks, Canadians and Mockneys - with scarcely a Scot amongst them. * Under the impression that people are NOT bored of the cliched jokes they use regarding accepting payment at the end of a routine. * Not very convincing when they bemoan how they don't get paid a salary because they are street performers (well, nobody put a gun to your head to make you come here mate) *Really annoying when they pick on people a la "Pay attention Sir, don't walk away" (not realising people only walk away from sh!t/boring acts. When will originality return to the Fringe and when will performers start coming again for the love of it, and not for the GOOD money they can make in a day ? Discuss. It's an international festival. Most of the locals have better things to do than go round dressed in stupid costumes to entertain the tourists. If you don't like one performer, move on to the next. There are plenty. I love the atmosphere during Festival. Probably you would find better performers in venues where you have to pay. |
