How to build a mobile wall partition? |
I need to build a wall on wheels for an art gallery, they need to be about 8 feet high, and it needs to be build for cheap. My idea is to install 4 heavy duty casters on double layered 3/4 plywood at 1' wide and 4' long. Then on top of that build a skeleton frame out of 1x4s and attach 1/4 ply to the frame. Does anyone have a better/ cheaper idea on how to do this? If you're an artist, you should have plenty of ideas.. The caster idea is okay, but for the "wall", I would use 2" Dow blueboard. It comes in 4x8 or 9 foot sheets, is ridged, sound proof and fairly durable. It can be painted with latex paint. To attach it to the caster frame, capture the bottom in between a 2" x 2" x 4' piece of lumber on each side. Use clear silicon to glue it in and screws to fasten them to the caster frame.. If you mount the blueboard as I suggest, the caster frame base need only be a 2" x 6" x 4'. To prevent the wall from falling over,(if that would be a problem), you will need to put the casters on "outriggers" about two feet long. They can be made using 1" x 4" lumber. I would also suggest you use four swivel casters for ease in navigating the wall. They only have to be light duty. Perhaps you could use furniture rollers. |
