Early Photo Effects?

I am looking for some info about one of the earlest photographers to use long exposures and interesting developing techniques to produce some eerie photos. All the photos were B&W and mostly contained a man or women with what looked like spirits around them. I believe some of these photos were on display in DC at an art gallery last year. Any help would be great. Thanks

This site talks about the history of 'spirit photography' http://www.prairieghosts.com/ph_history....
