Moving to Spur's City!?!?!? |
I am trieng to decided weather to move to San Antonio with my dad.... He lives in a very exspensive Loft on the River with an art gallery/bar and grill/and photo studio litterally downstairs. I've to to San An a couple times.... But...should I move there?? What are the benifites? What are the doubts?? As many people have mentioned the benefits of San Antonio, I thought I would mention some of the potential drawbacks too. I am not sure what your profession is, but I can attest that there are few decent paying, white collar jobs for a city of this size. Most of the jobs are service-oriented and being bilingual is an ENORMOUS plus when trying to secure employment in this town. There is a small-town feel to San Antonio, but that can be construed as a negative as well. It is run like a small town and so is its government. The airport is substandard for the 8th largest city in the U.S. I am not sure as to your ethnicity, or if that is of concern to you at all, but San Antonio is majority Hispanic. Some people have a hard time adjusting to this, others love it. There are no Tier-1 universities here, no NFL, no MLB, no NHL teams. This may or may not matter to you. There is a huge military presence here and this can be considered a plus or minus depending on the person. Summers are long and hot, luckily (compared to the east coast) they aren't too humid. When it rains we have flooding problems throughout the city as we don't really have a drainage system other than our streets. Crime is on the rise (more murders than ever before). On the Plus Side: Cost of living is very cheap for a city of this size There are lots of things (albeit touristy things) to do People are friendly Doesn't get very cold/virtually never snows Transportation network is good and for a large city the traffic isn't really bad (sure some spots are, but go to Houston or Atlanta or LA and we have NOTHING to complain about) The Spurs Many Mexican Restaurants (I hate mexican food, but if you love it, you will be in heaven!) Many Parades and Fiestas throughout the year Bottom line: the decision is up to yours and I am sure most of it will (as it should) depend on your relationship with your father. Evaluate it carefully and decide if you will be happy "living with him" and not just "living in San Antonio". I am sure if you look in your heart you will know the answer. San Antonio is a decent enough town, so let your relationship with your living with your dad be the deciding factor. Well the benifits are odvious. You'll be with your Dad. And I don't live but 30 minutes from San Antone and I love it. The history, the sites, the attractions. The malls, fiesta texas, sea world, the alamo, the crockeet hotel (which is said to be haunted) along with the manger hotel. There is so much in San antone to see and do. It has some very good colleges and universities. Excellent jobs. Bit's up to u. Just listen to ur heart. U'll know what to do. I wouldn't move there b/c it's Texas and the Spurs suck and are a bunch of dirty players. I agree with Rose. Believe me if I had a chance to live on the Riverwalk , I'd take it. I love it down there. The rest of the city is great as well(except for the Expressway construction and traffic, but he it comes with living in the city). The surrounding hill country is beautiful as well. Plus another bonus is that TONY DOESN'T LIVE HERE ! Don't pay any attention to Tony he isn't from here but I think that he wishes that he was. Some thing to do with sour grapes, I think. Some one has already told you that you would have the benefit of being with your Dad. I won't go there but I will tell you This is the only city that I have ever been in that is down right friendly with a small town appeal and atmosphere. I have lived and traveled all over the world I spent 20 years in the military and when I retired I came back here. I was raised in New England, but this is home. We have a wonderful mix of folks from every ethnic group you can think of but everyone gets along super well. I will also say that this city has not only the small town feel but also in some ways feels and looks very European. An example is when you meet some one you shake their hand and when you leave they shake your hand again. There is always some thing going on here unlike a lot of other places. If you are like most folks the first year you are going to be thrilled with it, the second year you are going to feel like it kind of OK but the third year they won't be able to drive you off. Note; Georgapeach has said that there aren't many good jobs here, this is a little bit skewed. There are a lot of jobs that are low end jobs. I am now retired and so is my wife but my last 10 years of work I averaged $57-62,000 and my wife did $43-46,000 a year by the way neither of us has a college education. Our daughter and her husband average almost $80,000 a year and neither of them has a college education, and before some one says but you are an anglo, I will dispel that now I am American Indian and my daughter has a hispanic last name. There are plenty of jobs here and the more education that you have the better for you. I will list a few that are white collar jobs and that pay well, Chase, QVC,Micro soft, Toyota Truck plant, Real Estate sales, USAA, Post Office, DOD civilian employ, SAPD, Fire Department, Different positions at the many colleges that are located here, Different positions at the many hospitals. This list could go on and on. Saying that there aren't good jobs here only says that the person that is saying it hasn't found that job for themselves yet. In all places, if you aren't happy with your lot in life,........change it! Get some education. i would move there....its really fun..and plus u can go to a spurs game and go to seaworld and the san marcos outlet mall |
