Selling individual bricks on a building for people to paint!? |
I am a keen artist and have begun looking into property to set up an art gallery for university / young freelancers to display their work. For funding i wanted to look into advertisement and sponsors. I had an idea to sell the buildings bricks to people so they could paint a design / logo etc.. onto the face of it. If this was possible what would i need to do to get permission and what would be the best way to explain my intentions? should i claim it to be an art piece / advertisement etc..? thanks Sure. Try it. Many non-profit organizations have been able to raise money in that manner. If you own the building, check to see if you are in business area with restrictions regarding the appearance of the exterior of the building. Some communities want their business district to look "congruent" and can actually fine a business with an non-conforming paint job. Check with the local building codes, and statutes. If you don't own the building, then you need the permission of the owner, in writing. If you take money, you must keep accurate records, and include the amount on your income tax return. Your goal is to set up an art gallery. You want sponsors to help with the funding. I can see how the brick idea could be considered an interactive art piece, and an advertisement, but realistically it is not going to generate much money by itself. (50 people @ $10/brick = $500) Hopefully, it will lead to several significant funding sponsors who see others in the community have interest in your project. These sponsors will want to help underwrite the costs of establishing a gallery, if they see there is support from the community. |
