Should I take a job opportunity that could leave me with a huge paycut now, but payoff later? |
I am currently a retail manager who makes pretty good money, but I am tired of the industry after 9 years and I want to move on to something else. I recently graduated with a B.A. in Communication, specific in Graphic Design. I would like a job in this area, but all my experience is in management. I have received an entry level offer from an art gallery. It would provide me with design experience and exposure in the art community. However, I would be taking almost a 20k paycut, and leave behind 4 weeks of vacation for only 1. Will it pay off in the end to take the art gallery job for the experience? To make it complicated, this is my first job offer, and I have other interviews in other fields coming up. I am confused and don't want to pass up an opportunity, but I don't want to sell myself short either. Help! If you can afford to make the move, it sounds like that is something you would have needed to do eventually anyway in terms of changing careers. As for it being your first offer, network as quickly as you can with others holding the same position to see if the salary is fair and work is satisfying. Any time you make a switch to type of role and sometimes even the industry you're in, you can likely expect a pay cut. If it's in a field that you really want to be in, go for it. since you have other interviews, see if they can give you a few days to consider other options (ask if you can have a week since you're anticipating several offers to consider). I think it's great that you're making a leap from something that you don't enjoy anymore to something you'll like better. Many people wouldn't make that sacrifice or take the risk. |
