How do I get known?? |
I know there are several ways of getting your art known/discovered, but I am wondering which way is better. Would it be better to ask local galleries to exhibit your art? (and would Manchester Art Gallery (the closest one to me) exhibit people's art?) or would it be better to use one of those websites for upcoming artists? Would anybody be able to give me some reccomendations, with reasons? Thanks. It's a lot of hard work! (Even if you go and live in London which seems to help) Here are some of the things you should try: 1) Put on exhibitions of your work or get a group of friends together, rent a space or even better find somewhere that will let you do it for free, make a buzz about it - get all your friends to tell their friends etc. 2) Enter any competitions that are relevant to your work (e.g. Jerwood Drawing Prize, New Contemporaries, East) 3) Sad to say - Networking is vital if your aim is to get known, go to as many shows as you can, find people who are in the same area as you and see how you can help each other 4) Promote yourself - get a website, business cards etc. 5) Keep in touch with the type of art that you are interested in, buy a-n or whatever, see what other people are doing 6) Stick with it! Do you belong to your home town's art club (or whatever it might be called)? Surely that would be your first step. They would do exhibitions and you could take it from there. I'm not myself and artist, but a musician, and I have some artist friends. The best way to get exposure is to practice your art! Paint, paint a lot, and show it to anyone and everyone. Go to gallery events, meet people, connect. It's all networking when it comes down to it. Meet someone who knows someone who knows someone. And just keep at it. A friend of mine has used http://www.artwanted.com/ to a degree of success. It's a good avenue to promote and sell your work. Best of luck to you! A good place to start is your local library. Most are happy to display art work and that way you can ensure a steady stream of people looking at your work for a nominal hire fee. Best of luck. Word of mouth is always best. Have dinner parties and people over for drinks etc. Give away a few as presents to people who entertain a lot. I've had a load of commissions and invites to exhibit in galleries through friends of friends. Otherwise you can slog through britart, saatchi, etc online but not always the best as you tend to lose touch with yourself and your art unless you're in it for the money. But otherwise, it gets your name out there anyway. There is so much commercial crap out there these days that it makes it difficult for the 'art appreciate' to sift through. Ultimately, word of mouth...hang in there. Experience There is a book called Making It As An Artist that has helped my artist friends. Gave them some direction on how to get their art noticed - how to present thier work and market themselves.....really helped them. It's good advice from a professional artist - JoAnn DePolo. Give it a try...hope this helps you. |
