Why do women make so much less than men in the art business? |
on average women make 3/4 of what men make, but in the art world they make only 1/3 of what men make. in addition, they occupy a very small portion of the spaces in museams and galleries what factors do you think contribute to this differencial? Artists are entrepreneurs. Female entrepreneurs, in general, earn less than their male counterparts, according a study done by a Director of the National Organization for Women, Dr. Warren Farrell. In fact the entrepreneur gap is even wider than the employee salary gap. Statistically, women may be more likely to be driven by their love of art than a need to feed their family. Here's a link to a synopsis, including his findings about the earning gap of entrepreneurs and the reasons for the wage gaps. http://www.forbes.com/work/compensation/... Well the male brain is genetically more suited for spacial relations. Perhaps they produce better art? That'd be my guess since an item is only worth what someone will pay for it. I don't know since 99% of modern art is like an erupted diaper. I've heard usually women are tougth not to expect any retribution of they work, so maybe in art as in many other fields, we are not so into asking for more and better oportunities, what any men do. I mean, they wouldn't do it if they weren't recognized, while women would do it only for their own satisfaction. That is a lie. Two reasons. A) Their work is not as appreciated (most likely due to its lower quality, since this is one of the only ways such a difference could be justified) or... B) They don't market their products as well as men do. Those are the ONLY logical reasons. Supposing that some "old boys' network" is out to get you is ludicrous and reeks of paranoia. The art scene cant be bombarded with "performance art" (aka sell selling random explosions of colors and forms for art) forever. Sooner or later some skill is required and that where men edge women, since female artists seem to be flooding the market with pretty similiar art. Less talent, less effort. Nobody cares about protecting poor wikkle womyn's feelings by glossing over their shortcomings anymore seeing as we've found it tends to lead to women insisting they be paid more for inferior products. Run along, cupcake. |
