How to handle racism, blackballing and slander in the arts? |
How do people handle discrimination, slander and blackballing in the arts? I am a painter and these things have taken a heavy toll on me emotionally. I have reached out to so called "support" organizations and even well known academics for advice. But none of them care despite all of the hollaring they do in the media and elsewhere. I am considering leaving america for good because I feel like i just have no chance here. There is a certain way art galleries and such are supposed to treat artist who apply themselves. However, I continue to run into mistreatment. i have proof of the bias and discrimination that i have received. In the form of rejection letters that were received despite the art Not being reviewed. As well as hate mail from well known gallery owners and others. discrimination is rampant in the arts for some specific people, genders and ethnicity. Sadly, I was born the wrong sex and colour it seems. the only thing I can think to tell you is that you will have to move around these people. you are bound to find some racist sexist bigot in any field you go into. But that wont be everyone, so you are also bound to find some open minded people. If you are having problems getting your art shown or sold then I guess you will have to find other markets fo you art. if you think that other market is outside of america then by all means go for it. in or out of this country once you start making a bit of a name for yourself then more and more markets should open up to you. |
