How do I get musems and art galleries to reconize me as an artist?

Try to target the gallaries that display materials of the same type (as close as possible; I'm sure your stuff is enormously original) as yours. Then, too, it would pay to take them only your very best work, which means you need to (a) do a lot of stuff, and (b) be very self-critical. There may be co-op galleries in your area (like Artisans in Santa Cruz, California) that would accept you as a member. Take them your best work, and be prepared to spend some time at the cash register or in the stock room, doing your share of the labor involved.

Depending on the type of material, you might be better off going to art fairs and shows that are short-term in nature first, to get a few collectors to recognize your work. Or you may even find you like hanging out in the sunshine and fresh air, and never bother with galleries, let alone museums, at all. And don't forget touristy areas that have sidewalk selling areas, a sort of permanent art fair. When I lived in San Francisco, there were a good many street artists who were at the same spot every weekend, and did enough business to support themselves.

One wealthy patron may be all you need. Perhaps a local restaurant will display your work on consignment? It gives them something for decor, and gives you exposure.

Normally you have to die before museums will reconize you. Galleries... put a rediculous price tag on your work... That should do the trick.
take the advice of auntb the person who answered your question first. Also, make yourself aware of as many galleries that are in your area as possible. Show your face and attend local openings.
