How do I approch art galleries for an art show or to display my work? |
How do I approch art galleries for an art show or to display my work? I own a gallery and I curate a few of the exhibitions. I like it better when artist simply ask when they come directly to the gallery they're interested in. Present your work maybe by email and have plenty of ideas that might appeal, but you have to be what we're looking for at the right time. Group exhibitions have to be a little cohesive when picking artists. There is a fee to show your work and a percent taken for every piece sold. This is something I have been considering looking in to. My friend has had an art show at a few different galleries. The way she explained it, is that you pay a small fee to use the gallery for a specific amount of time. Then they take a certain percentage of what you sell. Just try calling a few places in your area. I'm not sure if this is what you were looking for, but I hope it's a start for you. 1 go and check out the gallery first, to see if your work will look right in there Establishment. do not approach them, go home and then ring them. 2 tell them you are looking for galleries to exhibit your work, also what kind of artist your are example----- contemporary, traditional etc if they are interested, send then a resume, artists statement, photos of work on a c.d or take them in personal. they will tell what they want. good luck I am am artist too, it is not easy. i have been an artist for many years, I know how gallerys want you to behave. Before you walk into any gallery asking to display your work in there, make sure your resume is up to date. Have a slide sheet of your most recent works. Title the images and write the dimensions of the actual art pieces. Have these things in a presentation folder and if you can, take some actual pieces with you. Art doesn't always photograph well. You can mail these things, but it's best for a face to face meeting. You might get an answer sooner. I, myself have never paid a gallery to show my work or to represent me, however when they sale a piece, they will take a commission. Normally, it's 40-45%, but it can sometimes go high as 60% for the gallery. To me that's outrageous. To be honest with you, while I have gallery representation, I do better selling my art on my own. The best way to get your name out there is to join art groups and participate in every show they have and let the newspapers know when and if your art receives an award. |
