How do I get a top NY gallery to look at the work of an established artist new to the NYC art scene? |
I know an older gentleman who is a well-known contemporary expretionist/surrealist in his native country where he frequently holds exhibitions (he had his first show in the late 1940s when he was just a teen ager!). This talented man is also an amazing poet. He deserves to be recognized by his peers in the city he's been calling his home for the last 30 years: NYC. It would be a tremendous pity if no one outside his native land saw this artist's work. Any constructive suggestions? This is a great question! Your friend isn't the only one in this boat, either! There are more than 100,000 artists living in NYC at present. There are maybe 200 galleries in Manhattan so you can understand that only a tiny percentage of artists ever get a show in a gallery. As talented as your friend may be, he is in good company because there actually are a huge number of talented artists in the world.... and big numbers of artists willing to compete for gallery space using any means at their disposal. The likelihood of his getting representation in a NYC gallery is slim. That was the bad news.... here's some better news.... Your friend can show his work at one of the pay-as-you-go-galleries in Soho or Chelsea. He must pay a fee to be in a group show.... and it's not cheap, but it is do-able. Try the Agora Gallery. You can search on the net for their website. They have two galleries...one in Chelsea and one in Soho. He'll need to send slides to them for review. Although this is a less than perfect solution for him it will get him in a NYC gallery for a month. Good luck in your quest! Source(s): Professional artist, MFA from Columbia University, NYC. |
