Medical profession improving by having courses at art galleries? |
A 2001 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that medical students in a Yale University program acquired more astute observational skills than their colleagues who didn't take the courses at the art gallery. Besides assessing a patient's well-being during an office visit, finely honed visual abilities can also allow doctors to spot subtle changes in a patient's X-rays over time, for example. "When they can take a better look at the person in front of them, it helps them make better diagnoses and leads to improved sensitivity to the patient," said a workshop co-instructor. "That's a critical area that many feel is needed in the medical profession." Any changes since the 2001 report by AMA - now in the middle of 2007! They're just drumming up new ways to get medical people to buy art. I disagree with the premise. I think that doctors could get much more out of a formal course which delves into the subject of improving sensitivity and observational skills in a formal, scientific fashion. A doctor usually doesn't have the time to analytically observe and interpret the nuances of the human psyche as one does in observing and interpreting a piece of art.. He can, however, make gross judgments in seconds if he is attuned to the proper techniques for interpreting body language, inadvertent tics, subtle eye contact or avoidance... That technical and professional perspective leads to insight that can only be supplemented by studying art in an art gallery. |
