What are the best US cities to visit art galleries and museums? |
I am a studio art major and am really interested in traveling to different US cities to potentially work as a gallery director. I want to find a place that is great to live and has a lot of opportunities. Cleavland; because of the steel industry has a great gallery (honestly never been) but the collection includes the likes of turner, picasso (la vie) and a good selection of american art (church and ryder) or buffalo's albright-knox is good focuses on modern (balla, pollock, warhol) and is in a nice setting around the university and is in a nice classical building, also seems to have a good collection as does Detriot; Rivera and Whistler's famous Nocturne (no idea wether Detriot as a place to live deserves its reputation...) Source(s): My Art History prof's pitch for lesser american galleries up here in Canada, actually visted the Albright... NYC, of course, with too many large and small museums to name (don't skip either the Frick or the Morgan Library). LA has the Getty, Chicago has the Art Institute, Fort Worth has the Kimball, Houston has the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg (FL) has the Dali Museum, Atlanta the High Museum of Art (newly expanded). Depends if you want hot or cold weather, the hustle of NYC or the laid-back atmosphere of the South, how much you plan on spending on living expenses (NYC and LA are a small fortune). My guess is that NYC would have the most opportunities, since it has the most galleries and museums, but it might also be hard to break into the biz there because of the competition with other art majors. New York City is the art gallery and Museum capital of the World. You MUST go visit musuem of Modern Art and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Also, if you enjoy Photography, then ICP cannot be beat. I hope you don't mind cold weather either, since winters in NYC can be rough. hope this helps been to all the above listed places, so I am speaking from experience New York City and Washington, DC. me |
