When did art galleries become a joke, rather than a showcase for talent? |
I recently went to the Tate Modern gallery and was impressed by the Monet and selection of Picasso. However, the work of Fontata is surely a joke. For those who have not seen it, it really is just a rip in a blank canvas. Do the people who decide on what art is to be included, have any idea beyond the work of the classic artists, that everyone could pick out as being of a high standard? Is the idea for modern artists to try and lower the standard so much, that they prove what a joke modern art is? To highlight how poor those who chose his work, they have included a second piece. This one is pencil holes in a blank canvas. When did art become a joke, rather than talent? Is an Art Gallery meant to be a showcase for talent? I thought it was meant to be a display site for Art. This then raises the issue of what defines Art. Some people seem to think that it ought to be defined by how much hard work has gone into it, which is a bit like giving high marks to a school pupil's work because it took a lot of effort to achieve, rather than assessing the final work irrespective of the effort involved. And then there is ingrained conservatism that will deride anything that is not exactly as expected, and as was expected a decade ago, and the decade before that! And it surely cannot be apt to deny the place of some piece in the Gallery because it is not to our personal taste? That way either nothing belongs there (because there will always be someone who does not care for a particular piece), or everything belongs there, because there is always someone who DOES care for a particular piece. It seems to me that there is room in every gallery for work that stimulates, inspires, and sometimes shocks us. That which makes us wonder why it is there is doing a job in making us think about the nature of Art as well as the function of the gallery! If everything in a gallery was so totally unexceptional as to occasion no criticism whatsoever, then it would be a dead place; a sort of mausoleum of Art! When "art" was defined as 400 packets of sugar on the floor, or a crucifix floating in a plexiglass tank filled with the artist's urine. When gullible people started to buy the so called modern art. It was proved when a monkey was given a paintbrush and people actually thought it was the work of a modernist. It is unfashionable to stand up and say that modern art is a joke. When the talent became a joke. You've heard the story of the King's new clothes? How very apt. It must be art, someone said so. Great question. The rubbish that masquerades as 'art' today must seriously depress real artists who are struggling to make a living, never mind gain recognition. The Art World is in crisis right now. Tate Modern rocks, but only in places - it's a question of taste. Last time I went there I walked through an entire room that was essentially a building site - pallets stacked in a corner, plaster dust everywhere, a hard hat, Lucozade bottle on its side etc. You could see everyone thinking "why the hell didn't they shut this off?" but when we got the other door there was a sign explaining that it was an installation piece and everything was in fact made out of fibre glass. Top idea and the very fact that it had provoked a response in everyone in the room justified its existence in a gallery. Unfortunately five minutes later I found myself in a crowd of people watching a video of a man who'd filmed himself jumping up and down naked. Kinda put me off my lunch and frankly - not art. But hey, each to their own. I digress. In answer to your question, I'm not sure. But while people like Tracey Emin are considered "artists", we'll never know. Untalented arrogant pile of w*nk that she is. ps why was Monet in the Tate MODERN? Impressionism was a little while back wasn't it? Or was it Steve Monet, the famous sculpture maestro from Catford? Since the arrival of "a messy bed" or "a lightbulb" or "my faeces" - I could go on! The trouble is "The Emperor's New Clothes Syndrome". When a piece of crap comes along, critics should have the bollocks to say "This is crap" instead of pretending that they & their knowledge of art is above the scrubby minions of the general public & being terrified that someone might think they're thick! |
