Buying gifts from art galleries...? |
...what would you buy from an art gallery for 1. a wedding gift 2. yourself & 3. a house warming present and 4. how much would you spend? I usually buy small items. Greetings cards, diaries, calenders, candles etc.from the gift shop. Usually up to 10 pounds. As art is so subjective, I wouldn't spend alot of money on a wedding gift unless the couple chose it themselves. How about you? 1: no 2: no 3: no 4: not more than 50 dollars Original art is very personal and I would not assume to know what someone else would want to own. I buy only for myself in a gallery. (but most of the time, if I see something I like in a gallery, I just make one for myself, with adjustments as i like.) To those of you saying that it too personal to make such a gift - beware. We were given a small, 6" x 4" oil by a young unknown artist as an engagement present, over 40 years ago. Wherever we moved it went with us, sometimes it was put in a drawer, sometimes it was hung but we never got rid of it. I have been a widow for some years now and recently decided to downsize from the large family house to a very much smaller house. When I as deciding what had to go, I decided that after all these years that picture had to go. One of my sons took it to a local gallery to see whether it had any value; the owner refused to make a valuation on the grounds that he had no experience in 'high value' paintings but arranged for it to be valued by one of the big auction houses. It has just been sold at auction for 拢22,000. The friend who gave us the picture was as cash strapped as we were at that time and I doubt whether he paid more than a pound or two! |
