Can anyone suggest how can one promote sales of oil paintings other than sitting in an art gallery?

Yes!
Both my mom and my step mother have gone to restaurants and asked them to display them with contact numbers they sold well and they changed them out every month the restaurants were thrilled to have free art ( and sometimes a commission) My mom and step we thrilled because they got a place to display and the diners got to see real art and were able to buy it.

Ebay! or other such websites. Or create your own website. Or advertise on websites or postcards, ect.
