Who do we call a person who is in charge of a museum or art gallery? |
Who do we call a person who is in charge of a museum or art gallery? Curator Curator. The head of the museum or gallery is generally called the 'director'. A curator is someone who specializes in putting together exhibits--usually something they know a great deal about [like a type of art, or artists from a certain period or style]--and aren't always employees of the museum or gallery; sometimes a museum will invite a curator with special knowledge to put together a show. A docent [pronounced 'doh-sunt'] is a person who provides special information [a lecture, a walk-through, etc.] for visitors to a museum or gallery. Being a docent requires knowing a whole bunch about what's up on the walls and in exhibit cases. Museums are run by directors. * Museum Directors provide the conceptual leadership of the museum. * Qualifications vary, but Museum Directors must have excellent leadership and management skills, be adept at fund raising and knowledgeable in the subject matter of the museum. * Most museums in the United States (80%) have budgets of less than $5 million. In these museums the Director may do everything. Other people have suggested "curator," but a curator is typical an academic specialist in charge of part of the museum's collection and its exhibition. * Curators usually have master's degrees and often PhDs. * Curators are responsible for the care and interpretation of the objects, materials and specimens belonging to or lent to the museum. * Curators make recommendations for acquisitions and deaccessions, perform research to identify the provenance (history) of the objects in the collection and publish monographs, books and other materials based on their research. * Curators also conceive and manage the development of exhibitions. The information from this post came from the Smithsonian's Career Center.
