How would an artist go about opening/displaying works in an art gallery?

1.) ask the gallery/look up any info on gallery website. Some galleries have a yearly deadline for exhibition proposals. They post instructions for applying on their website.

2.) look in the local news for "call for artists" and apply to participate in exhibitions. Some papers have artist opportunities. Go to art openings and ask artists there how to find out about exhibition opportunities in your town/area.

3) ask cafes or restaurants if they are interested in showing your art. 2D art is probably going to be easier than 3D. Have a portfolio ready to show.

4). work hard.
you gotta pass muster with the gallery powers that be.
and that may not be easy because they don't want to see your work...you gotta shmooze, maybe take them to lunch on your own dime couldn't hurt. but you better have something pretty good or you will be wasting your time and theirs, and their time is very valuable to them.
