What should you wear to a photographer's "opening" at an art gallery? |
What should you wear to a photographer's "opening" at an art gallery? NOT casual. I would be mortified to see anyone coming to one of my shows in jeans and a t-shirt. I'm not as pretentious bastard, but a gallery opening is (at the least) a semi-formal event. Think "nice party" or "fancy dinner." If you're female, you really can never go wrong with the simple black dress. If you're a guy, suit & tie it. You can always take off the jacket and tie if you feel overdressed. -- Richard Rasner Nakayama Studios go casual, photography is all "spontaneous" totally whatever you feel Do not go casual! This is a special occasion. Wear something you'd wear to a cocktail party... a little black dress (if you're a female) or a suit and tie if male. I have been to a few of these and am an artist myself. An opening is a big deal, so you should make the effort to dress up a little. Black is your best bet for color. i think you should wear a nice black knee length evening gown go classical, and what ever you wear, make sure you have a black, simple yet elegant, silky clutch do whwatever you feel like. as a gallerist i like to see many different types of dress at an opening. Why don't you call the gallery and ask if there is a dress code for the occasion. They won't know who you are so what do you care what they think about your asking? It MAY even be black tie (probably not, but it COULD happen). I have not been to many openings but the ones I have been to were at least "business cocktail attire". If you are a woman and want to be noticed do not wear all black. ALL of the women will be in black. You'd think being artists and art lovers they would have discovered color. My standby is black silk pants with a fuschia silk tank and a fuschia, turquoise and tobacco brown vertical striped short silk "kimono" worn with "ethnic" necklace and chandelier earrings, strappy black heels and a black clutch bag. ENJOY! |
