How to Start and Properly Operate an Art Gallery?

I know this is a very big issue... I hope u guys can help me through...

Starting an Art Gallery may be as simple as finding a shop, paying the rent and displaying your own art. It gets more complicated if you show expensive art or the works of other artists because you will be financially and legally responsible for any loses. You may have to register with your county to obtain a DBA certificate if you are Doing Business As your shop's catchy name instead of your own name. You may need insurance geared to your operation and know how to execute appropriate contracts that cover sales and commissions, etc. You may need alarm systems to reduce insurance costs. You may need to advertise and have the public on the premises (including liability for injury). You will need to do bookkeeping for taxes and payroll if you hire help. The_observer has a good idea as to how you can get help to start a small business, even if your mentor has not run an art gallery. Good luck.
First Step is to go to SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) an agency which is part of the SBA. Look online for the nearest office near you. Tell them you need a counselor who has experience in the Gallery business. You need a location with good foot traffic and cheap rent. You should haunt antique auctions or estate sales to get artwork to sell. Take art appreciation courses and read as many books as you can. Get friendly with local artists ONCE you get a location.

Check out the Small Business Administration web site -- they're a great resource for the small business owner. I listed a couple of other handy links as well.

Try reading up on the subject -- check out Amazon, your local bookstore or library.

Prior to investing your time, money & effort into a business name, it is strongly advised that comprehensive research be conducted to ensure that the name you're interested in is truly available.

This entails searching the pending & registered Federal and State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files. Then, if clear, you can decide if you would like to file for a Federal or a State trademark.

Research is needed to make sure your trade name is legally available, before opening, before expansion, before incorporation or before designing your logo. Similarities in sound, appearance and meaning affect you too!

There are 16+ million trade names in use in the United States. Similar names matter, if close in sound, appearance or meaning. Similar names in related classes, distribution channels and customer matter too. You are affected by Common Law use (14 million), State Trademarks (500,000) and Federal Trademarks (2 million).

It depends on what kind of gallery you want. Get some experience working in a gallery, and have assistants that you can depend on. In addition to watching you finances, etc.
