How can I start an Art Gallery? |
I want to possibly start online first. But does anyone have suggestions for the steps to take? Depends on what your goals are. Want to make be assured of making a lot of money? You need a business degree and maybe a degree in art and lots of social skills. Want to have fun and maybe eventually make a lot of money but for now just be unconventional and get some experience? Rent or better yet borrow a space. Walk around your town and find empty storefronts. Find out why they are empty. Sometimes owners will rent a place out for a month or special event. I've done this several times and even gotten a free space in exchange for cleaning up and painting. Once you have your space, clean up, paint, make a sign (enlist a sculptor's skills - it's free advertising for their work), get some artists by putting up fliers and signs at art schools, print out some invitations, get some donated food or do a potlock style opening. Voila! "Instant" art gallery. It may not last, it may not make you a ton of money, but it will get you and your artist friends some attention. If you make it a fund-raising event for a non-profit, you'll get even more advertising, more attention and possibly more opportunities. How good are you? Before jumping the gun, I would look into some free or inexpensive artist communities online (see sources below). Try selling some art work in these venues or online auctions first. Try some art fairs too -- just make sure that they are higher end. The craft shows (unless you do woodcarvings, etc.) aren't great venues for painters or photographers. artquest.com dart.fine-art.com www.thevisiongrove.com also do a search on google for art community sell art |
