What in a normal art gallery commission for selling a painting? |
What in a normal art gallery commission for selling a painting? Count on anything from 20 to 50 percent of the selling price, depending on the gallery's location, their clientele, and the services they offer. Most mid-range gift shop/galleries charge 35%, gallery-only 40 to 50%. So set your price according to the highest commission. Your art should sell for the same price regardless of where it hangs - whether it's in a fancy gallery, at a weekend show, hanging in a restaurant, or at your studio. If your customers see the same work priced differently around town, you'll lose their confidence and their business, plus lose your gallery contacts at the same time. Source(s): 30+ yrs an artist, 14 yrs gallery owner I've heard that it's 50 percent. 40% is probably what you would consider to be "normal" but in certain areas they can go as high as 70% In Santa Fe, the normal commission for selling is 50% to 60%. Doesn't matter if the art is good or bad. 50% the gallery should collect all taxes on the sale and write you a check for half the retail price. Usually 40 % for "beginners" or "nameless" painters if the gallerist pays the rent (lot of self-financing artists out there paying more than just their own way!) and up to and over 60 % for the high-priced set of established artists. |
