An art gallery reception is an event where are artist or several artists show their new work. People are invited to meet the artist, view the work, and have some refreshments. They are usually open to the public. The attire can be very casual to dressy casual to very dressy. Usually no one really cares what you wear, unless it would be something totally inappropriate. It would also depend who is sponsoring the event. If it's a REALLY big show by an important, well-known artist, then I would say dress up. If it's a show at a small gallery in town, then casual will work.
