When you visit an art gallery...? |
...do you intend to buy, and what would encourage or put you off from buying I visit art galleries out of interest, as I like to see what others turn out and the variety of styles in vogue at the moment. When a "real" painting ( I do not like prints) does something for me I am tempted to buy it, but I have to think as to whether it will fit in with our interiors and where we are going to place it. With modern halogen lighting, paintings can look fabulous in a shop and be completely drained of life when they are in a normally lit house. So yes, I have made mistakes once or twice and regretted a purchase. Price of course is a consideration. I bought pictures done by young and coming artists before their work became very expensive, and I could not afford their paintings now. Some artists churn out repetitions of certain ideas like wine bottles or still lives of objects which have become stereotypes and I would not buy that as it gets stilted as a style. Even if it is impressionistic, a painting has to be evocative one way or the other and it has to be original in style and reflect a competent technique before I would consider buying it. I am not adverse to abstracts, but my husband loathes them, so they are given a wide berth. I have to live with him as well as with the paintings, so concessions have to be made to each other's tastes. Finally, I would never knowingly buy a painting that is a copy, albeit slightly tweaked, of another painting. A Leonardo is admirable in its uniqueness in the Uffizzi, the Prado or the Louvres, but l would not ever consider buying even an absolutely faithful copy. I hope this is helpful for your research. If your talking real art, then resale value can be a put-off. Reasons to buy 'real' art is 10% admiration and 90% knowledge that your going to make a killing on it in a few years time or when the artist kark's it. If your talking art that 'you' like but is of no real value other then materials and the artists time, then just walk away and sleep on the decision .. and double check you actually have a place to put the damn thing !! I am an artist so i don't go to galleries to buy art i just go to check it out. If i were to buy, i certainly wouldn't buy it from an art gallery. I'd contact the artist and save myself the galleries 30 to 40% markup. Since i do paint, i create what i like to hang on my walls and when i paint for others, they pay me to do specific paintings that interest them. My art can be checked out at hellosanantonio.com under artist name ''Guerro''. heck no IF I bought something from every art gallery I visited, I would need one. But I do enjoy seeing art.....all kinds. |
